Student codes 'google for torrents'

A student recently decided to create an algorithm like Google's to index web pages. After some iterations and months of hard work the code did not seem to work as well as Google's, so he decided to use the fruits of his labor in a more restricted field - he limited his crawler to find bit-torrent files. He then proceeded to check those torrents to eliminate the deadwood and the fakes and to put up the ones that had sufficient information on a server. Here is his description of what he did and… Continue

Enclosing an open documentary on free culture?

With a few others, I participated in a series of interviews at the Free Culture Forum in Barcelona, which we were told would be part of a 'open' documentary.

According to one of the co-interviewers at the time, this material is in danger of being enclosed.

Here's the explanation by Pierre Marcel Racine

Contact him via isaac@isaacbcn.com

"Since we made that interview though, our project has taken a funny turn. At the end of November the producer… Continue

Restoring animals as peers through totemic kinship: The Quest For A New Kinship With Nature by James William Gibson

Book: A Reenchanted World: The Quest For A New Kinship With Nature by James William Gibson.

Introduction

James William Gibson:

"1, The culture of enchantment creates symbolic, totemic kinship ties with wild animals. It does not erases human-animal differences, but clearly links them in human-animal kinship ties.

2. Consecrating land--restoring enchantment or sacredness to lands and waters--is a collective act. Consecration changes the… Continue

Planetary Forum = a project for a global forum where everyone has the right to speak and vote on all the subjects that one feels related to

Proposed by elf Pavlik at Rise Up Labs:

"Please feel officially invited to join the "Planetary Forum" which I like to compare to the mythical concept of 'the round table' just thanks to our current technology with a 'seat' for every single human being interested in participation. Please also feel free and even encouraged to invite all the people you know for participation and creating it.

I have just started putting some information at:… Continue

P2P Etiquette

I am hopefully not breaking P2P etiquette here, but my Kickstarter project funding seems to be stalled.

If I am to make further progress this year, I need to make this work.

So, I am requesting that you consider 5 or 10 dollars for the project, its is less about the amount, than about attracting a show of interest and support. This is a reasonably small sum, and you'll all have access to the full plans when they are published in march 2010. Equally important is for interested… Continue
