"Good news all around: with more than two weeks to go on their funding campaign, Mailpile has exceeded its funding goal for the development of an alternative web-mail application with enhanced encryption and safety features.

Led by an Icelandic team of open source veterans and privacy advocates, Mailpile aims to provide a secure, open source, encrypted email service. The team has set a January 2014 date for an “Alpha” release.

The funding and ongoing development is community based. “When we aren't sure what features to work on next or need to make some other major decision, we will seek input from the Mailpile Community. To this end, we will set up a forum dedicated to this conversation. After all, you are the ones funding the work and your voices should be heard. [...]

No ads, no spying. Just powerful software backed by a community of people who care.”

In light of the Snowden leaks and the subsequent shutting down of US based encrypted email services such as Lavabit and Silent Circle, we think that the Icelandic based Mailpile represents not only a credible option for the safeguarding of our privacy, but an excellent opportunity to protest by migration to ethical software platforms more akin to P2P values. It is also worth noting that Marco Fioretti has proposed embedding Mailpile within a suite of easily accessible, decentralised online applications (email, social media, collaborative documents, data storage, etc.).

Turning money into code

Now that the crowdfunding goal has been met, the team explains their needs and how they will use any extra funding obtained until the end of the campaign.

Needs:

“Over the next few months, we need to sort out a lot of things to do with the infrastructure of the project:

We need a community forum to continue interacting with our backers

We need automated tests for our code-base

We need to define APIs for plug-ins and interacting with external apps

We need to further develop our theme architecture

We need to solidify the overall design of the system, so it is clear where and how people can pitch in

These are all prerequisites for being able to accept outside help - or to be able to turn money into manpower into useful code. So these are our top priorities for the Alpha release in January.”

Allocation of extra funds:

“Having extra money gives us a few options:

Raise our salaries

Work longer, extend the lifetime of the project beyond 1 year

Hire additional people

Hire contractors for specific tasks

Set money aside for a "rainy day" or unexpected events

Attend conferences, hackathons and meetups in other countries

Which of these makes sense, depends a lot on how the project develops and how much money we end up with at the end of the campaign. At the moment we are leaning towards the last three - contractors, a "rainy day" fund, and growing our community in person”

Eben Moglen of Freedom box is one of the funders for the project. The crowdfunding campaign continues until the 10th of September 2013"
Launch of the Global Timebanktag:p2pfoundation.ning.com,2013-08-12:2003008:BlogPost:514022013-08-12T17:35:24.000ZMichel Bauwenshttp://p2pfoundation.ning.com/profile/MichelBauwens

“Alternate have published our first e-zine, Radical Realities, with contributions from John Hilary, Dr. Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed, Heather Marsh and Michel Bauwens.

The Alternate Collective was formed out of Occupy Birmingham, UK. The collective comprises of radical practitioners that promote and publish about democratic and cooperative governance. We aim to propose practical solutions, to envisage what a ‘new settlement’ could comprise of for European citizens. This is a practice developed out of the occupation, where we sought to canvas and write our own responses to the budgets proposed by the UK government.

We felt that merely seeking to protest against Austerity and the financial domination of the economy by corporate interests was insufficient. On seeing the G8 was to meet in Northern Ireland, during June 2013 we spent several months of prior research, to identify the agenda and to call upon practitioners, theorists and academics who could not only present a critique about the G8 but inform a conference on alternative approaches. To point out the many paths which exist to enable a sustainable society, in the common interest, that mainstream media outlets, by and large, ignore.

This first edition of radical Realities will shortly be followed by a second edition, featuring transcripts of speeches from Dave Boyle, Prem Sikka and Nick Dearden, who also spoke at the Alternate G8 conference.

We anticipate further editions of Radical Realities, supported by a new and growing platform that engages those interested in developing practical policy alternatives to those that European governments and inter-governmental institutions have foisted upon the worlds citizens.

As the global ecosystem of fab labs, hackerspaces, public laboratories and other community driven workshops grows, so does the need for effective exchange of knowledge between these peer knowledge hubs.

Can we cook up a grassroots implementation of peer reviewed knowledge? Or should we? Are existing platforms (journals, conferences) open to p2p communities? What great libre (online) tools are out there? Can we help the developers of potentially great tools in making the next step to greatness?
In other words: How can grassroots communities exchange knowledge? Last summer, Fabfuse was the first Grassroots Fab Lab Conference. Over 50 people from around the globe shared ideas on how to create selfsustaining public workshops for digital fabrication. This summer a follow up will take place 19, 20 and 21 July.
The conference will be loosely organized in 3 topic streams:

Open toolchains for creation, collaboration & communication: which open tools serve the grassroots community, which tools can we help become better, which tools do we miss altogether?

knowledge sharing: how can we free the knowledge present in many p2p hubs?

community building: how do distributed communities develop, live and thrive?

"We are reaching out to you today because we just launched a crowd-funded project and need your help spreading the word, through your email list and social networks.

We are proposing a new model for "slum rehabilitation" in Mumbai. The idea is to build on, and enhance existing construction practices in slum-notified areas. In contrast with wholesale redevelopment projects, which dominate the field, we believe that the "solution" is much closer to the "problem" than policy-makers and urban planners seem to imagine.

We want to demonstrate that it is possible to collaborate with local masons, craftsmen and residents, and add value to their work, by opening venues with collaboration with architects, engineers and material producers. Our starting point is a pilot project in a slum-notified area in Mumbai.

We will build a fantastic small house and sell it at the price of any other houses in the neighbourhood. And then we will get the ball rolling, repeating the scheme in the initial area and others. The long-term goal is to create housing cooperatives that bring together the people who have benefited from the scheme. These will become agents in the development and improvement of neighbourhood-wide infrastructure and amenities.

We have written about the project on urbz.net, created a support page on facebookand opened a crowd-funding page on indiegogo.

Training Part II is meant for anyone who is interested in advocating a commons approach to dealing with issues the UN focuses on. This could take two forms: either by joining one of our teams and actually attending a UN conference, or else giving input from your own home where you can remain updated by our Instant Response Network.

Part I of this Training focused on the UN. Part II will focus on diverse aspects of the commons and on how a commons approach can be applied to the resolution of global problems as they emerge from global to local levels. The workshop will provide hands-on experience of presenting your commons approach to delegates and the UN in several steps.

Speakers will be:

Akiwa Gizzel, Director of Human Affect, who will speak on Indigenous Peoples, some special ways in which they make contact with Nature and their particular vulnerabilities and concerns when lobbying at the UN

Rob Wheeler, UN Representative of the Global Eco Villlage Network (GEN) and one of the leaders of the Commons Cluster will describe his personal experience of actually living in a commons community. He will also describe how GEN builds Ecovillages worldwide. For instance, 46000 are planned for Senegal.

Alanna Hartzok, MA, Director of the Earth Rights Institute will discuss the approach of Henry George and a commons approach to financing as a tool to help bring about sustainability.

Facilitator and designer of the Training and workshop: Dr. Lisinka Ulatowska. (Coordinator NGO Major Group Commons Cluster at the UN.)

Technical Director: Myra Jackson

Those wishing to participate in the workshop

Please

1. complete the attached form and send it to Lisinka.Ulatowska@gmail.com.

2. prepare for participation as follows:

download from http://www.commonsactionfortheunitednations.org/un-rep-training/ the advocacy resource booklet: Growing the Commons Top-Down and Bottom-Up.

read Measures to Shift to an All-Win, Sustainable, Commons-Based Economy on page 50. This chapter also deals with measures to alleviate poverty.

Prepare a one-minute rationale for using a commons approach to a sustainable economy as if you were talking to a delegate. (You are free to adjust this to a particular country or just to delegates in general).

Make a list of measures that seem most important to you to mention to the delegate if s/he agrees to extend the conversation. In this way your prepared presentation will consist of two separate parts.

We shall both practice our presentations and learn more about the measures you choose to bring up.

3. Please also listen to and watch the slide show section of Part I if you did not attend Training I or if you have not yet attended a UN conference on sustainability. The slide show can be found on: http://www.commonsactionfortheunitednations.org/un-rep-training/ by clicking in the grey section on Part One UN Decision Making/ view the page.

Please note: Part II is being held much later than planned. This made it possible for us to present speakers who would otherwise have been unavailable.

Part III will deal with Strategy and build on the work that the Commons Cluster will be preparing in the coming weeks.

We will mainly be discussing these topics in relation to the accelerating developments in the ICTs. Our hope is to create new synergies by bringing together many contributors and observers of the recent changes, movements, protests, and mobilisations. We hope this will enable us to increase our collective understanding of the new
possibilities emerging in front of us for a radical social change.

The seminar is initially supported by Networked Politics, Transform!
CFP: The Political Economy of the Commons (Seminar at the University of Helsinki 25th May 2013)

In the past two decades the commons has become a widely debated concept within various academic disciplines, such as environmental studies, social sciences, law and political economy. The commons has also become a central part of the vocabulary of contemporary social movements.

The commons is often seen as an alternative to ”the market economy”, as well as the capitalist mode of production and its core element, the commodity form. The abundant logics of network commons, apparent for instance in open code and varieties of peer-to-peer production, would thus stand in an antagonistic relationship to commodification of knowledge by means of copyrights and patents. It has also been argued, for example, that new commons can be identified when non-commodified social relations are strengthened through arrangements such as collaborative consumption and participatory budgeting.

On the other hand, it can be argued that the future of capitalist societies will depend on the appropriation of the production of the commons. In this case the commons is not seen so much as an alternative to but more as a consolidation of capitalism. For example the post-Fordist organisation of work can embrace autonomy, democracy and commons-based production, but it is also constantly coming up with new ways to capture and commodify the value produced from the commons.

We welcome papers that aim to engage with these already existing divergent debates on the commons, as well as ones proposing new critical perspectives on the political economy of the commons. We are also interested in questions on the relationships between the commons and democracy, social movements, nation states and world politics. Possible themes could include, but are not limited to, the following theoretical questions:

- What is / how to define the common/s?

- What is the relationship between enclosure and the commons?

- How are the concepts of value and the commons related?

- What distinguishes the commons from the public and the private?

- What are the historical specificities of commons-based production and how does it differ from the capitalist mode of production?

- How are the commons produced within networks, communities, metropolises or social movements?

This seminar will present for discussion the results of three years of surveys and research carried out in the framework of the PROPICE project (Intellectual Property, Commons and Exclusivity), sponsored by the French National Research Agency.

Info via http://www.mshparisnord.fr/ANR-PROPICE/

The research contributes to the fundamental observation that the rise and reinforcement of intellectual property rights over the last thirty years, marked by exclusivism, has generated strong tensions that often conflict with the needs of the numerous communities or innovators and creators.

Consequently, the formation of commons in the domain of scientific, technical or artistic creation can be seen as a series of attempts to build legal and organisational tools to surmount the obstacles and limits imposed by the strengthening of diverse intellectual property rights.

By combining historical and empirical studies in multiple fields (ICT, biotech, pharmaceuticals, cultural goods, etc.) with economic and legal approaches, the research carried out in PROPICE is intended to help portray the promises and difficulties inherent in the construction of commons as alternatives to the implementation of exclusive IPR

The PROPICE project, under the scientific direction of Benjamin Coriat, brings together three partners:

- The CEPN (UMR CNRS 7234) from the University of Paris 13, (Sorbonne, Paris Cité); PROPICE team directed by B. Coriat

- The CRDST (Centre de Recherche sur le Droit des Sciences et des Techniques) from the University of Paris 1; PROPICE team directed by C. Noiville

- The SESSTIM (UMR INSERM/IRD/University of Aix-Marseille); PROPICE team directed by F. Orsi

This session aims to explore the often surprising consequences of research where technologies gain their own agency, and the environment starts to speak back: what happens when researchers try to turn citizens into sensors (Goodchild 2007) and sensor assemblages start to becoming citizens? This session asks for papers that examine Citizen Science, Participatory Sensing or the Internet of Things, with a focus on the activities of more-than-human actors and addresses these questions:

- What kinds of new knowledge emerge when we pay attention to the participation of more-than-human actors?
- What kinds of power relationships emerge when institutional actors have to deal with more-than-humans?
- How can we co-design for the participation of more-than-human collaborators?

Please send all abstracts (max. 300 words including title, name, contact details, abstract) and/or questions to Christian Nold (christian@softhook.com).
Call for Papers

Concepts and practices related to social and solidarity economy, complementary currencies, time banks, consumers’ cooperatives, cooperatives of production and distribution, social management of water, social management of waste, crowdsourcing, microfinance, open source, commons and P2P production, manufacturing on small scale, community supported agriculture, social groceries, social medical centres, etc. show a remarkable expansion. While this kind of alternative collective ventures have appeared in some countries already some decades ago, in Greece there has been a rapid development of these ventures only in recent years. However, there has been a remarkable proliferation of them at global level, with considerable geographical diversity, on the advent of the new millennium.

Associated debates deal with the specific features of this kind of ventures and corresponding practices that emerged under the condition of a shrinking Keynesian welfare state and the transition to a post-fordist era. To some degree this debate is also associated with the emergence and institutionalization of New Social Movements. It is also acknowledged that the abovementioned ventures transform the geography of urban spaces in several ways.

Thus relevant research questions may regard different aspects such as: issues about the kind and grade of alterity of these ventures with respect to diverse practices in everyday life in the cities, the role of urban areas for the evolution of such ventures, the relation with sustainability issues, the transformation of social relations in the course of these ventures entailing the creation of new future visions for the cities, the role of citizenship, participation and democracy and the impact on planning issues, the “transition cities” debate, alternative approaches to urban development (e.g. post-development, de-growth), localization issues in the era of globalization, the impact of alternative ventures’ networking on urban space, the role of e-networking and ICT, revisiting creativity and “smart cities” approaches under the focus of such alternative collective practices, the role of suburban areas with the mixture of land uses and any emerging contradictions with conventional agricultural practices.

The aim of the Special Session is to bring together researchers from across a wide spectrum of disciplines geographers, spatial planners, political scientists, economists, sociologists, anthropologists, engineers, psychologists, philosophers, etc. who are interested in collective ventures, solidarity economy and the urban space. This multi-disciplinary call for papers intends to highlight the inter-disciplinary approaches that these ventures need for a comprehensive and integrated interpretation. At the same time, it aspires to facilitate academic networking and be the sparkle for a debate on policy issues around alternative routes in the era of crisis.

The artists, critics, researchers and curators invited to contribute to this publication are giving us the keys, references and insights to comprehend the various art forms that coexist on the net, in its interstices and its peripheries. From an artistic point of view, the authors reflect upon what has taken place on the internet in the last two decades, and express how they perceived, experienced and lived through this era. From a social, political and artistic point of view, the contributors tell us: - how the network changed their relationship to the world, time and space, - how it transformed their uses, practices and ways of thinking - how it became a space for sharing, exchanging and creating. In a prospective approach, they are forecasting the coming years, wondering if the internet can stay a territory worth exploring in the future and if it will still be a fertile ground to produce hybrid art forms in which the physical and virtual worlds merge, rub off on each other and collide. The contributors also present a selection of websites they regard as significant, iconic and essential.

http://cfeditions.com/Turner

Il s'agit de la traduction en français d'un ouvrage publié
aux Presses de l'Université de Chicago, et qui a connu le
plébiscite de la presse anglo-saxonne (New York Times,
Guardian,...).

"Information wants to be free"... c'était Steward Brand
"We owe it all to the hippies"... idem
"Stay hungry.

ISBN : 978-2-915825-10-7 -- 430 p. -- 32 €
Dec. 4: Commons evening in Berlin with David Bollier and Silke Helfrichtag:p2pfoundation.ning.com,2012-11-28:2003008:BlogPost:475442012-11-28T21:11:51.000ZMichel Bauwenshttp://p2pfoundation.ning.com/profile/MichelBauwens

Creative Commons is turning 10 this year in December. We would like to invite you to an evening lecture on December 4, 7:30 pm, where the author, activist, and co-founder of the Commons Strategies Group, Academy fellow David Bollier, will discuss "The Commons as a New/Old Paradigm of Governance, Policy and Political Action" at the Academy's Hans Arnhold Center. The evening will be moderated by Silke Helfrich and followed by a reception.

In his lecture, Bollier will explore the increasing international
interest in the current discourse of Commons as a paradigm of governance shared by an entire community. The appeal of the Commons stems both from an insightful critique of neoliberal economics and policy, as well as
from its practical systems for managing value. Eschewing homo
economicus, the standard economic model of human behavior, the Commons draws upon understandings of human action that also encompass our capacities for cooperation and collaboration. The result has been a
recent explosion of innovative commons-based projects such as free and open source software, the re-localization of food, collaborative consumption, open-access publishing, and alternative currencies. This lecture concentrates on the global Commons movement as a federated,
transnational movement of movements to overcome the limitations of centralized institutions and markets in favor of commons-based models.

With a budget of around €80 billion, the EU’s new programme for research and innovation, Horizon 2020 (2014- 2020), is part of the drive to create new growth and jobs in Europe. It will place a particular focus on innovation, relying on a number of specific financial instruments.

One of the Digital Agenda Priorities is to strengthen the environment for web-entrepreneurs in Europe, facilitate the increase in the number of web start-ups, as well as support their growth.

In the context of the current process of identifying the most appropriate activities to be carried out in this domain, we are inviting you to share ideas on any actions in the area of ICT innovation for the benefit of web based entrepreneurship / web businesses, which could be undertaken and financed by the EU. These could cover technological research, innovation issues, as well as business environment aspects.

Please, tell us a brief description of your idea, an estimate of the budget that should be allocated to that idea in order to have an impact on Europe and why you think it is important for tech startups in Europe. Finally, please also include who you are or who you represent while submitting the idea.

The web page of the consultation is at: http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/newsroom/cf/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=8835

Be aware that we are focused on aspects related to funding/supporting measures and not regulation/legislation. You could imagine things like:

- For web entrepreneurs who only have the idea: launching pilots to test new ideas,

- For latent web entrepreneurs: making calls to supports web entrepreneurs with grants to start their startups

- for established web startups: using inducement prices to support startups that have already some maturity

- for successful web startups – but not global leaders yet - launching big pilots to support successful web startups to become global leaders

- for all type of web startups: using financial instruments such as debt/equity facility.

- for all type of web startups: supporting online networking platforms, launching mentoring programs, supporting awareness creation events/campaigns, supporting accelerators programs in Europe, supporting crowd funding platforms to act as platforms to get first customers for the startups and access to pre-seed funding, etc.

We would be grateful if you would send your ideas to the e-mail address CNECT-WEBENTREPRENEURS@EC.EUROPA.EU by 05.12.2012.

We will make an interim analysis of the ideas received by 21/11/2012 with the objective of starting drawing the scenario for Work Programme 2014. Therefore, you are welcome to send your input before 21/11/2012. You can submit your ideas before the day of the closing of the consultation on 5/12/2012.
